DreamWorks SKG was formed in 1994 as a partnership between Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, with the financial backing of Paul G. Allen. DreamWorks Studios was purchased in 2006 by Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures.

DreamWorks Animation, focused on the production of computer-generated animated films, was spun out of DreamWorks in 2004 as a publicly traded company. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "DWA.rdblquote
